Oil running down the back of a 2012–2018 Wrangler 3.6 is usually the oil cooler housing in the engine valley — not a rear main seal. Confirm the valley is wet, then replace the housing. Don't drop the transmission. Don't install another cheap plastic unit.

The Fix, Up Front

Confirm the leak is coming from the valley, not the rear main.

Order a real housing — the Dorman 926-959 aluminum kit for most DIY, or current Mopar 68596317AB if you want the latest OEM plastic. Skip $90 no-name Amazon copies.

Pull the upper and lower intakes, swap the housing, torque the five E8 bolts to 106 in-lbs (12 N·m).

New intake gaskets. Fresh oil and coolant. Filter cap to 18 ft-lbs (25 N·m) — that number is stamped on the cap.
First time: plan on 3–5 hours. Independent shops quote roughly $700–$900. Dealers putting another plastic housing in quote $1,000–$1,500. Parts DIY is about $250–$400.
This is a garage job with a specific bolt order and inch-pound numbers. Print it. Don't scroll a forum with greasy hands.

Don't Call It a Rear Main Seal
The housing sits in the V of the block, under both intake manifolds. When it weeps, oil fills the valley like a bathtub, overflows the back of the block, and coats the bellhousing. From under the Jeep it looks exactly like a rear main.
Shops quote rear-main jobs because that's what they see from below. You can check this in five minutes:

Pull the engine cover.

Shine a bright light down past the oil-filter cap, behind the lower intake.

Dry, dusty aluminum in the valley = look somewhere else.

A puddle of oil sitting on the block = this housing.
Mighty Auto Parts documented the same trap on a 2014 Wrangler 3.6: the valley can hold about a quart before you see a drip. Their field check is a wood stick dipped next to the housing. Wetness on the tip from a recent filter change is nothing. A pool is the housing.
Other tells: burning-oil smell at stoplights (oil hitting the exhaust), slow oil-level drop with no obvious pan leak, and — if the cooler fails internally — brown “strawberry milkshake” coolant. If coolant and oil are mixing, park it. Don't drive it.

What Actually Fails
The factory housing is glass-filled nylon. It lives in the hottest hole on the engine, with oil on one side and coolant on the other. Heat cycles bake the plastic until it warps, the base O-rings quit sealing, or a quick-lube tech cracks the neck by treating the cap like a spin-on filter.
The cap spec is 18 ft-lbs (25 N·m). That's stamped on the cap. Snug plus a click. If you put a 1/2" breaker on it, you bought this job.
Chrysler has revised the plastic housing several times. The current Mopar number for 2014+ JK is 68596317AB — updated seals, a web between the oil and coolant ports, no figure-8 gasket between cooler and housing. As of 2026, JK owners are split: some want that latest Mopar unit, some still want aluminum so the cap can't crack the housing again. Both are legitimate. A $90 unbranded “aluminum” housing is not.
2012–2013 filter trap: Early JKs use a nipple-style filter (MO-744). 2014–2018 uses a flat-bottom filter (MO-349 / WIX WL10010). The Dorman 926-959 is the 2014+ design. Install it on a 2012–2013 and you must switch to the 2014+ filter from that oil change forward. Use the wrong filter and you can hold the bypass open and throw P06DD. The kit includes a reminder sticker. Put it on.
Parts: Two Honest Paths
Path A — Aluminum, do it once (recommended for most DIY): Dorman 926-959. Complete kit: aluminum housing, cooler, filter, cap, seals, mounting bolts, intake gaskets. It supersedes the older 926-876 housing-only unit. Confirm fitment for your year in the Amazon garage tool before you click buy.
Path B — Latest Mopar plastic: 68596317AB from a Mopar dealer or parts house (around $200, sensors/hose extra). Buy Fel-Pro MS 97204 intake gaskets separately. Still plastic, so the cap torque still matters for the life of the Jeep.

Mopar 10-year / 150,000-mile OAT coolant, 50/50 premixed — 2013–2018 JK manuals call for this formula. Match whatever is already in a 2012; do not mix OAT and HOAT. Premixed is easier than concentrate for a top-off after you drain the radiator.

6 quarts of 5W-20 meeting Chrysler MS-6395. 2018 JK owner's manual: 6 quarts with filter. That manual names Mopar, Pennzoil, or Shell Helix. Buy it locally.
Skip no-name housings. JK owners who cheap out on this job are the ones posting “it leaked again” three months later. Reuse your original oil pressure and oil temp sensors if they still work — aftermarket senders are a common P0520/P0522 source. If a sensor fought you coming out, replace it with Mopar, not the cheap one in a combo listing.
Tools You Actually Need
You already have sockets. The two things people skip — and then strip block threads — are the inch-pound wrench and the E8 socket.

EPAuto 1/4" click torque wrench, 20–200 in-lbs — for the housing bolts, intakes, and fuel rail. A foot-pound wrench is not accurate at 9 ft-lbs.

EPAuto 3/8" click torque wrench, 10–80 ft-lbs — for the filter cap at 18 ft-lbs and the two sensors at 15 ft-lbs. Your 1/4" in-lb wrench tops out at 200 in-lbs. The cap is 216.

Neiko 14-piece E-Torx set (includes 1/4" E8) — the five housing bolts are E8 external Torx. A 1/4" 12-point socket will sometimes fake it. Don't.

Housing bolt order on a Wrangler (start snug, then to spec): driver-side rear, driver-side front, passenger-side rear, passenger-side front, very front last.
Upper intake: front, back, then middle. Repeat the sequence so outer bolts don't unload the center.
Job Sequence
Disconnect the negative battery cable. Cold engine. Drain the oil. Drain enough coolant that the cooler hose won't dump into the valley — if coolant runs into the oil passages you just made the job worse. On a JK, the radiator petcock is passenger-side front; expect around a gallon, then close it.

Intake off. Engine cover, airbox tube (don't forget the sensor on the tube), upper intake, fuel rails, lower intake. Label every vacuum line and wiring clip. Residual fuel pressure will spit — rag around the quick-connect when you crack it. The rear upper-intake bolt hides behind the firewall heat pad; pull the pad clips and you'll see it.

Tape the ports. The second the lower intake comes off, cover every intake port. A dropped socket in a cylinder is an engine.

Suck out the valley. Shop vac, turkey baster, or rags on needle-nose. You're looking at the crime scene. Clean the block mating surface until it's actually clean.

Housing out. Unplug the two sensors on the back. Five E8 bolts — they often stay captive in the housing. The front oil-return neck goes into the block about an inch. Wiggle the housing up, then pull the coolant hose clamp once it's free. Don't pry on the plastic.

Transfer sensors. Old sensors onto the new housing with thread sealant on the threads. Torque to 15 ft-lbs (20 N·m). If your original housing had no oil-temp sensor, Dorman's unused port gets the supplied plug at 25 ft-lbs (34 N·m) per their sheet. If a sensor fought you coming out, replace it now with Mopar. You're not going back in for a $30 sender.

Lube the new O-rings. Engine oil, light coat. Dry rings tear. Dorman 926-959 includes two sizes for the front return O-ring: 22.3 mm OD for 2011–2021, 23 mm OD for 2022+. Use one. Leave the other in the bag.

Housing in. Seat the front neck. Start all five bolts by hand. Torque to 106 in-lbs in the order above. If you feel a bolt get heavy early, back it out — you are about to strip an aluminum hole in the block.

Lower intake, fuel rails, upper intake. New gaskets. New injector O-rings lubed. Torque table above. Don't reuse the old intake gaskets. Injector-to-rail slots have to line up or the rail won't sit flat.

Filter and cap. Dorman kit includes a filter. Cap to 18 ft-lbs.

Fluids. 6 quarts 5W-20. Premixed OAT coolant to replace what you drained. Bleed the cooling system at the thermostat-housing bleeder or you get a heater that blows cold and a temp gauge that lies.

Start, leak check, recheck levels. Oil pressure in the first two seconds. No valley puddle. No coolant in the oil.
While the upper intake is off: spark plugs (especially the buried bank), PCV, and the oil pressure sensor. That's free labor. It is not required to stop the leak.
What NOT to Do
Don't replace just the O-rings. If the plastic is warped, new rings leak again. You already paid the labor. Put a housing in.
Don't install another random plastic housing off Amazon. If you want plastic, buy current Mopar 68596317AB. If you want aluminum, buy Dorman 926-959. The middle option is how you do this twice.
Don't use a foot-pound wrench on the E8 bolts. 106 in-lbs is not 106 ft-lbs. That mistake strips the block.
Don't overtighten the cap after the repair. Aluminum won't crack like plastic. The seals will still shift if you stand on it. 18 ft-lbs. Write it on the cap with a paint pen.
Don't drive it with the valley full. Rapid oil loss plus oil on a hot exhaust is how you turn a $250 job into a fire. Mighty's tech bulletin on this exact 3.6 housing cites fire reports from housing leaks.
Don't confuse this with the Pentastar tick. Collapsed rocker-arm needle bearings are a different 3.6 problem. A new housing will not quiet a ticking valvetrain.
Don't reuse a 2012–2013 nipple filter after a 926-959 install. You converted. Flat-bottom 2014+ filter only.
After the Repair
Next oil change: WIX WL10010 (or MO-349). If you came from a 2012–2013, throw the old nipple filters away.
Recheck housing bolts at the first oil change. 106 in-lbs, same wrench.
If the heater blows cold, you still have air in the system. Bleed it. Don't keep adding coolant hoping it goes away.
