Pink or white crust on the 3.6 thermostat housing is the housing. The thermostat is built into that plastic piece. You replace the whole assembly, torque two bolts to 106 in-lbs (12 N·m), then bleed the system at the housing bleeder and the radiator. Skip the bleed and the Jeep overheats with a “new thermostat” in it.

The Fix, Up Front

  1. Confirm the leak is the housing — dried coolant at the two mounting bolts, the hose neck, or the bleeder screw. A wet upper radiator hose clamp is a clamp. Crust on the plastic face is this job.
  2. Buy a complete housing with the thermostat and gasket already in it. Preferred: current Mopar 5184651AJ (also listed as 05184651AJ) from a dealer. Amazon path: Dorman 902-852. Skip $16 no-name copies.
  3. Match coolant to the Jeep, not the bottle color. 2012 JK 3.6 is 5-year / 100,000-mile HOAT. 2013–2018 JK is 10-year / 150,000-mile OAT meeting MS.90032. Do not mix them.
  4. Two housing bolts to 106 in-lbs. Inch-pound wrench. Not 106 ft-lbs. Haynes has sent people down that hole.
  5. Fill at the housing bleeder first, then the radiator. Heat on high, A/C off. Watch the gauge through a couple of heat cycles. Air left in a 3.6 is how this repair “fails.”

First time: about an hour on the swap, then however long the engine needs to heat, cool, and burp. Independent shops quote a thermostat; you're doing the housing, the gasket, and the bleed. Parts DIY is roughly $50–$90 plus a gallon of the right coolant.

If you don't have a JK 3.6, this is not your repair.

Shopping a used JK and the valley is wet with oil, that's the oil cooler housing, not this. Coolant crust on the front of the engine, passenger-side of the valley, is the thermostat housing. Both belong on a used JK buyer's inspection.

What You're Looking At

The 3.6 does not get a $12 thermostat you drop into a metal neck. Chrysler molded the thermostat into a glass-filled plastic housing and bolted that housing to the front of the engine with two fasteners. There is a bleeder screw on top. The upper radiator hose clamps to the outlet.

Heat cycles crack the plastic, flatten the gasket, or weep at the bleeder. Coolant runs down the housing, dries, and leaves a crust. Level in the bottle drops. You may never see a puddle on the ground.

Other tells:

Dorman rates the 902-852 thermostat at 203°F opening temperature. That's the OE-style number for this housing. A Jeep that never gets off 185 after the swap still has air, a bad ECT reading, or a housing that isn't sealing — not a 160° racing stat you didn't buy.

Don't Replace “Just the Thermostat”

You can press the old stat out of some housings. It is not worth it. The leak is usually the housing or the gasket. The replacement you want is sold as one piece: housing, thermostat, gasket.

Current Mopar number is 5184651AJ (05184651AJ). It supersedes 5184651AF / AG / AH / AI and 5184655AD. Dealers and Mopar houses have it. It includes the thermostat.

The Amazon unit that actually fits 2012–2017 Wrangler and 2018 Wrangler JK is Dorman 902-852. Housing, thermostat, gasket. Confirm your year in the Amazon garage tool. It does not fit JL.

There is no widely proven aluminum JK 3.6 thermostat housing the way there is an aluminum oil-cooler housing. This one is still plastic. Buy current Mopar or Dorman. Do not buy a $16 listing that only copied the OE number.

Dorman reviews on this exact 902-852 are mixed on durability — some JKs run years, some stats stick or weep in months. If you want the part Chrysler actually revised, spend the extra at the dealer for 5184651AJ. If you want it on the porch tomorrow, Dorman is the listing that is actually for sale.

The Coolant Trap (This Will Gel the System)

Chrysler TSB 07-004-12 (Rev. A) is the document. 2013-and-newer Wranglers (and most other Chrysler products that year) switched to OAT. HOAT and OAT are not interchangeable. Mix them and you get ammonia smell, debris in the coolant, blackened aluminum, and a heater core full of gel.

Early 2013s can still be HOAT. Read the owner's manual, the bottle cap, and the reservoir sticker. Color is a lousy test — OAT can look purple, pink, or orange depending on light and dye. If the history is unknown, drain and refill with the correct formula for that year. Don't top off mystery soup.

2012 and 2018 JK owner's manuals both list 10.5 quarts (9.9 L) for the 3.6, including the bottle filled to MAX. You will not drain all of that by pulling the upper hose. Plan on a gallon of the right 50/50 for a housing swap. A full flush is a different job.

2013–2018: Mopar 68163849AB 10 Year / 150,000 Mile 50/50 premix. Pour it. Don't mix concentrate at the fender if you don't have to.

2012: Mopar 68048953AC 5 Year / 100,000 Mile concentrate. Mix 50/50 with distilled water. Amazon's title on this listing says “OAT.” The part number and the 5-year / 100k formula are the 2012 HOAT bottle. Confirm the label on the jug before it goes in.

Do not use “universal” green, Prestone “any make,” or whatever the quick-lube has on the shelf.

Torque Specs (Do Not Guess)

JK-specific number from the 2015 Wrangler service manual, posted on WranglerForum for a 2014 3.6 housing: 106 in-lbs. Chrysler 3.6 cooling tables across the Pentastar family list the same value: 12 N·m / 9 ft-lbs / 106 in-lbs for thermostat-housing bolts.

108 ft-lbs is a Haynes reading error. A WranglerForum owner snapped a housing bolt trying to hit 108 foot-pounds. The book said inch-pounds. If a chart says 108 and your wrench is marked ft-lbs, put it down.

Job Sequence

Cold engine. Level ground. Negative battery cable optional; you are not doing electrical work, but you are leaning over a running-hot cooling system later — start cold.

  1. Intake tube off. Engine cover. Two 10 mm bolts on the tube between the airbox and the throttle. Loosen both clamps. Unclip the small hose that rides on those bolts. Unplug the sensor on the back of the tube. Set the tube aside. You should be able to see the housing, the upper radiator hose, and the bleeder.
  2. Catch the coolant. Jug under the housing, pan on the floor. Pull the radiator cap so it actually drains. Slide the hose clamp back, twist the upper radiator hose off the housing. Coolant comes out of the hose and out of the engine once the housing moves. You are not draining 10.5 quarts. You are dumping what's in the hose and the front of the engine.
  3. Housing out. T30 (or hex) on the two bolts. Short extension. More coolant. Pull the housing. The old gasket often stays on the engine. Scrape it off with plastic. Mating surface has to be clean and dry. Don't gouge aluminum.
  4. Housing in. New gasket is already in the Dorman / Mopar unit. Same orientation as the old one — bleeder up. Start both bolts by hand. Torque to 106 in-lbs. If a bolt gets heavy early, back it out. You are threading into aluminum.
  5. Hose on. Seat the hose against the stop. Clamp past the barb / knurl so it cannot walk off. Crack the bleeder open.
  6. Cold fill. Pour the correct coolant into the radiator until it comes out the bleeder as a solid stream, not foam. Close the bleeder snug. Fill the radiator to the bottom of the neck — not overflowing the cap seat. Fill the bottle to MAX.

Bleed It or You Didn't Finish

This is the step that generates the “I replaced the thermostat and now it overheats” threads. January 2026, WranglerJKForum: owner put in Mopar 05184651AJ, still had P0128 and a waterfall behind the dash because the front end never got raised and the system still had air.

Do this with the engine cool whenever you open the radiator cap.

  1. Lisle funnel on the radiator neck (or the cap off if you don't have the funnel yet).
  2. Heat to the highest setting. A/C off. You want the heater core in the loop.
  3. Optional but useful: raise the front ~6 inches so the radiator cap is the high point. Not required by every write-up. It helps stubborn pockets.
  4. Idle until the electric fan cycles. Watch the cluster. If the needle walks past mid-gauge toward 225–230°F, shut it down and let it cool — you still have air or a different problem (water pump, cap, fan).
  5. Top off as the level drops. Squeeze the upper hose as it softens. Open the housing bleeder briefly on a cold engine if you still hear gurgling; close it when you get a solid stream.
  6. Cool down. Recheck radiator and bottle. Drive around the block. Cool down. Recheck. Two or three heat cycles is normal. Keep the bottle at MAX so the system can't suck air on cooldown.

A loose bleeder will pull air back in after you've already burped it. Snug it. Don't round it off with pliers for sport.

If the heater stays lukewarm and the gauge jumps, you still have air. Don't keep driving it hoping the 3.6 “self-bleeds.” Some techs say it will. The people posting overheating after a housing swap are the ones who believed that.

What NOT to Do

Don't treat this like a $12 thermostat drop. The leak is the housing. The replacement is sold as an assembly.

Don't use 902-852 on a JL. Wrong housing. JL 3.6 is Mopar 4893926AH (and later letters), different bolt pattern.

Don't torque in foot-pounds. 106 in-lbs. The 108 ft-lb Haynes figure snaps bolts.

Don't mix HOAT and OAT. Chrysler published the failure mode. Gel, corrosion, overheat.

Don't overtighten the bleeder or the housing. Plastic. You already know how this story ends.

Don't call a valley full of oil a thermostat leak. That's the 3.6 oil cooler housing. Different fluid, different job.

Don't ignore P0128 after a careful bleed. Then you diagnose ECT, wiring, and whether the new thermostat is actually opening. One Amazon housing is not a diagnosis. A scan tool with live coolant temp is.

Don't drive it with the bottle empty. Air in, overheat, warped parts. Fill it.

After the Repair

Recheck the housing and the bleeder the next morning, cold. White crust returning in a week is a gasket that didn't seat or a housing that cracked on install — you over-torqued it.

Next heat cycle: gauge should settle near the middle, heat should be actually hot, bottle should hold. P0128 may take a few drive cycles to clear. If it comes back with a waterfall behind the dash, bleed it again before you buy another housing.

Used JK with crust on this housing is a $50 part, not a walking-away issue — unless the previous owner mixed coolant or cooked the engine chasing the leak. Look in the valley for oil while you're there.
