The JK electrical part on this page is the clockspring, the coiled ribbon behind the steering wheel. It carries the driver's airbag, the horn, and the steering-wheel buttons while the wheel turns. When the ribbon breaks you lose the horn, the cruise or audio buttons, or both, and the airbag light comes on. Mopar 68339336AB is the current upgraded number. It supersedes the 68193280 series.

Year coverage is not clean. Mopar's store titles 68339336AB as a 2007–2017 clockspring. A dealer catalog lists it for a narrower range and shows 5156106AG for 2018 JKs. Dorman 525-127 lists 2007–2017 Wranglers and the 2018 JK, and it crosses the 68339336 family. Match the number on the old part, or check the VIN, before you order. On many JKs the clockspring is part of the steering-column control module, so the year alone is the wrong way to shop.

A light that comes and goes as you steer is the usual wear pattern. A light that is on solid after a battery disconnect can also be a connector that was never seated. Check that before you buy the part. There is nothing to repair. These are sealed assemblies.

This page does not list batteries, the TIPM, or window motors. JL stop-start trucks use a different electrical layout, including a small auxiliary battery. If you are on a 2018-and-later Wrangler that is not a JK, use the JL electrical page.

When to replace

Replace the clockspring when the airbag light, horn, or wheel buttons fail and the diagnosis points at the ribbon, not a blown fuse or a loose connector under the shroud. Center the steering wheel and the new clockspring before it goes in. An off-center unit tears the ribbon on the first full lock. If your old part is 5156106AG, or the label does not match 68339336AB, do not force the supersession. Buy the number on the Jeep.

Safety

This is an airbag circuit. The risk is accidental deployment, not a high-current short. Disconnect the battery and follow the service manual's wait before you pull the wheel or unplug the clockspring. Do not probe the airbag connector with a test light. If the yellow harness or the wheel itself is damaged, or you do not have the centering procedure, leave it to a dealer or a shop that does airbag work. Clearing the light with a cheap scanner does not mean the bag will fire in a crash.
